Cutting Board

  • The wood I used is wenge (the dark wood), basswood (the light colored wood), and Padauk (the red wood.)
  • Glue. I used Titebond type III because its waterproof.
  • Sealant. I used Butcher Block Conditioner. Its available at Woodcraft or on Amazon, and I'm sure more places.
  • Tools. I used a table saw, planer, router and router table, and sand paper.

We got the wood at a "Hardwood Store." My wife picked it out. Basswood isn't the hardest of woods but I hope it will be okay. I just looked up basswood. It has a 410 value on the Janka hardness scale. It's considered a hardwood, but just barely. My wife had me make these as Christmas presents for my two sister-in-laws. It's possible I'll have to make two more next year, maybe I'll use maple. This was my first foray into cutting boards and the use of hardwood. Live and learn.
