You need to get a wood burning pen, which can be found at most craft shops. Once you have a design laid out (I printed a large map on multiple sheets of paper and then traced it), you just plug the pen in, wait for it to heat up, and then follow the lines you traced. If you want to do the dark background like I did, then you will need to get wood stain in your desired color and use a paintbrush to follow the edges of the map to ensure it doesn't bleed over into your work.
